Work in Progress

Hand-piecing is always enjoyable. Here is one of my current hand-pieced projects which you may recognise from some gift-wrapping paper currently on the market. It's all scrappy, using reproduction prints, even the background pieces are from scraps. There will be 30 units, five by six and it's a perfect portable project!

New sashiko sewing machine

I'm pleased to say I've had a play with the new Baby Lock Sashiko machine. It's amazing - a running stitch on the right side of your work with no stitching in between - it's impressive. The back of the piece looks like a chain stitch and the Sashiko machine stitches through layers, so it's perfect for quilters.

World's Biggest Hexagon Quilt

Gail Chalker of Gatton writes about the world's biggest quilt that was displayed at the Brisbane Craft & Quilt Fair in October 2009 and the Brisbane Craft Expo in March 2010:

"It has now been 'chopped up' and I was very happy to make the first cut into the quilt. The quilt was cut into 115 individual quilts and are currently being distributed.
The first quilt given was to 6 year old girl who was run over in a quad bike accident and as a result has spent many months in plaster casts and a wheel chair. She was so delighted with her quilt and asked if she could take it back to hospital when she has more pins and plates removed. Her smile made us have a little tear in our eyes.
Another quilt has gone to New Zealand to be raffled to raise funds for a 'mens shed' for a nursing home in Amberley NZ who have quite a few elderly gentlemen. What a great thing for the men in their twilight years. "

What a fantastic effort for all involved!

The first of many

This is my first blog posting and the first of many I hope!

You know the old theory about quilts and cats....well, while in Memphis, Tennessee recently, I encountered quilts and cats - one of each at the Pink Palace museum and Quiltsmiths in Cordova. Here is a broderie perse quilt from the Pink Palace Museum and the second pic is of Sparky (cat) with Rita of Quiltsmiths , he was very welcoming - full of Southern hospitality.
